FLORENCE, S.C. (WPDE) — The South Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating two unrelated workplace incidents in the past month at WestRock on Paper Mill Road in Florence, according to Holly Beeson with the South Carolina Department of Labor.
Employees at the plant said two men were burned in both incidents.
ABC 15 is told that one had to be treated at a burn center and required surgery for his injuries.
Officials added that one incident happened this week and the other on Sept. 16.
Smurfit WestRock Director of External Communications, North Carolina, Robby Johnson, released the following statement on the incidents:
“I can confirm an unrelated incident in a separate area of the mill required an employee to be transported to the local hospital on Sept. 16, 2025. Both incidents are under investigation. Safety is a core value at Smurfit Westrock, and the health and well-being of our employees is our first priority. We are working to support both employees and their families.”
It’s not clear when OSHA’s investigation will be complete.
