Report: Worker was fatally electrocuted at Montana mine

An electrician died at a Montana platinum and palladium mine on July 26 when “he contacted (an) energized 13,200 Volt switchgear in a power center.”

That is the preliminary finding of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration regarding a fatality at the Stillwater Mine late last month.

The worker — 50-year-old Brian M. Hanson – was killed in the incident at Montana mine near Columbus in Stillwater County.

He worked as an electrician at the mine, which is operated by South Africa-based Sibanye-Stillwater Limited.

Hanson had worked at the mine for more than five years, according to MSHA.

The federal mine safety agency’s preliminary report lists 426 workers at the Stillwater Mine with 356 of those miners working underground.

MSHA investigates accidents and deaths at U.S. mining operations.
